I had to read this book as a text for O.T. Survey, a class I took while in Bible College. Mr. Merill wrote a wonderful book that does not confuse Bible students nor casts doubt on the certainty of the validity of the O.T. Scriptures. Great infromation and well documented. I also like his charts and foot notes.

A very good read. Informative and engaging. Packs a ton of useful information into an efficient outline. Extremely helpful to those who are diving into the OT for the first time in a focused study.

I completed this 300 pager a couple of years ago because it is required reading for an online class that I took at Colorado Christian University. As the title says, An Historical Survey of the Old Testament is a comprehensive but concise study of the first 39 books of the Bible. It's a book I should have read long ago and a great addition to the library. I do not see myself going back and reading the entire book again, but I can definitely see myself flipping through it for it a quick answer. A few of the perspectives were new to me and have aided my teaching.

The information in the book made for a better understanding of Biblical happenings within a historical context. The author left religious doctrine for the theologians but was very supportive of archeological findings and their support of history within the Biblical context. This text was an interesting and easily understood reading; an excellent handbook for any student seeking confirmation of factual happenings for their Bible stories.

For my Biblical studies at GCU, this was a book required for my class in Old Testament History. I found it to be very informative, enlightning, and I learned many new things that I had not previously been aware of. Excellent book.

While this book focuses on Old Testament History, you go over not only the big stories that everyone knows, but the lesser known sections as well. Understanding these less popular sections creates a deeper understanding of the favorites you grew up with. An excellent source of information on the Old Testament.

Well written and well organized for the college student. This book was a help in my classes.

This is a nice piece of work by a very godly man. His book is an overview of the Old Testament in chronological order with insights added from his knowledge of archaeology and original sources external to the Bible. Dr. Merrill is an expert in Sumerian language and Hebrew. The value he brings to the table is in sharing translated ancient manuscripts and inscriptions (on stones) that have been recovered as well as expanding on the Biblical history to include history and cultural idiosyncrasies from other sources.

This book is very interesting with an insight into how to read the old testament. When you disregard the popular information and truly read the words of the old testament, you understand much more.

The listing for the book read "used" but when I received it it was actually in brand new condition. I received my book fast and was extremely satisfied!
