Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-This atlas skillfully sketches the history of the area known today as Uzbekistan, from prehistoric times to the present. It traces the many conquests of the region with the accompanying expansions in trade, cultural enrichment, and new religions, and documents losses in prosperity and the reasons for periods of decline. Boxed insets profile individuals and movements. The last third of the book covers relations between the Uzbeks and the Russians both in tsarist times and during the Soviet period, and concludes with a chapter on Uzbekistan's independence and the challenges the country faces. Numerous maps help readers situate the ever-changing names of places mentioned in the text. Full-color photographs, political posters, and even a few cartoons further enhance the presentation. While many readers may feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of unfamiliar names of places and people, the illustrations will be of great help to them. The suggestions for further reading, however, are better suited to upper-level, college-bound students. All in all, an excellent addition.
