Book Description

February 1, 1992

"[Of] the 12 well-crafted essays in this volume...the most useful are those dealing with the Holocaust."
Choice

"Especially recommended for college-level students of Jewish history and culture."
The Bookwatch

This is a critical exploration of the most repercussive topics in modern Jewish history and thought. A sequel to Katz's National Jewish Book Award-winning study, Post-Holocaust Dialogues, this book identifies the main issues in the contemporary Jewish intellectual universe and outlines a larger, more synthetic understanding of contemporary Jewish existence.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"With this work, Longmore and Umansky offer historians, sociologists and other readers intrigued by this area of scholarship an opportunity to understand disabilities as broader and more complex than a single, generic and primarily medical category."-"Publishers Weekly",

5.0 out of 5 stars Most important topics in Judaism today, October 29, 2006
By
R. Kaiser (New Hampshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In this book Professor Katz discusses the most important topics in Judaism today. Besides containing papers on Franz Rosenzweig and Abraham Joshua Heschel, Katz discusses the role of racial antisemtism in Germany after WWI; outlines and analyzes the issues of comparing the Holocaust to other historical events, such as the mass witch burnings of the middle ages, black slavery, the decimation of North American Indians, the Nazi assaults on Gypsies and homosexuals, and Polish and Ukranian losses during WWII.

Katz discusses the various ideas concerning the uniqueness of the Holocaust, and more theological responses to it.
