Editorial Reviews

Review

(Reviews of the 1st Edition):

"From ancient Rome to the absurdity of pro wrestling, here's a fast-moving history of conversation and community. This book will make you smarter."
- Seth Godin, author, Linchpin

"Understanding the truth about social behavior is essential in an always on and connected marketplace. This intelligent, informative, and entertaining book provides marketers with critical insights into that understanding."
- Tom Asacker, author, Opportunity Screams: Unlocking Hearts and Minds in Today's Idea Economy

"It's great to see someone who has communicated so effectively to marketers turn instead to culture at large...this is the first book to put our renewed collective agency into historical perspective. Baskin is at once refreshing and informing."
- Douglas Rushkoff, author, Program or Be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age

"Jonathan Salem Baskin puts today's social media into context by exposing its deep historical precursors and making a wealth of unexpected and intriguing connections."
- Tom Standage, author, The Victorian Internet

More About the Author

I explore the ways innovation, privacy and reputation influence how we interact with businesses, governments and one another. I've written seven books; pen regular essays for Forbes and Advertising Age; post daily essays at Histories of Social Media; keynote corporate and association events around the world; and I'm a Senior Fellow Emeritus at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

I have 30 years of professional experience working at big ad/PR agencies and at major brands. In 2013, I co-founded Consensiv, a reputation controls firm, and joined TechNexus, a private sector national venture collaborative, as a managing director.
