Great read on the history of Sanford & Lee County, and notable architectural structures, December 27, 2007
This review is from: The History and Architecture of Lee County, North Carolina (Hardcover)
It is unfortunate that this publication is no longer available new, as Lee County and Sanford specifically, have seen their interest in historic preservation and architecture grow steadily over the last decade.
And as more residents move to the area due to its unique location nearly centered in the state, this interest will surely continue to increase.
The City of Sanford alone created four National Historic Register Districts beginning in 1997, and many of the structures and historic details are featured in this publication.
Today, the two local historic districts(Downtown Sanford & Rosemount McIver Park) continue a marked upswing in investment and local interest, and the two other National Historic Register Districts (Lee and Hawkins Avenue) have shown renewed interest in local designation.
I found this reference to be a very entertaining and educational read, and think it is of great value for anyone interested in the architectural history of the area.
If one can find a copy for under $100, it is a bargain.
My only complaint is that the latter portion of the publication cites many Sanford and Lee County structures with poor quality photos and lightweight descriptions taken directly from the 1997 National Register survey documentation.
Given the high overall quality of this publication, it would have been nice to provide some better quality photos and descriptions beyond "just the facts". But given that the publication was produced in concert with that survey, this issue really isn't surprising.
This one observation, along with the book's current scarcity(and resultant high price) leads me to a four star rating.
But even with that in mind, this is a "must have" for anyone interested in Sanford and Lee County history and architecture.
I hope the Railroad House can find the resources to reprint this publication at a later date, and if able, maybe even provide an updated and revised copy with some better quality photos and additional information.
