Book Description

June 1984
When John McNamara was a young boy he walked the streets in his Bronx neighborhood and often wondered how the streets got their names. He began to ask the people in the area questions and researched maps and books. Later, he traveled by bicycle, kayak and auto to collect more and more information. Eventually, he visited every street in The Bronx at least once.

When he grew up, John met others who had similar interests in history and they formed The Bronx County Historical Society, all the while adding to his collection of street name histories. Many years went by until the new executive director of the Bronx County Historical Society persuaded him to compile his extensive collection of notes as a book. Eventually History in Asphalt: The Origin of Bronx Street & Place Names was published. People all around the country bought it, and it has since been revised and reprinted 3 times. In 1985, The City of New York bestowed a great honor to the penultimate Bronx historian and named John McNamara Square at Calhoun and Randall Avenues. The circle of history marches on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sidewalks Memorialized, March 8, 2010
This is an excellent rendition which contains
the history of Bronx streets and major thoroughfares.
For instance, Ampere Avenue is named after the
famous physicist Andre Ampere. Pelham Bay Park
is described as a collection of well known estates;
such as, Roosevelt, Edgar and Le Roy.

The book is well organized. The rendition would be
perfect for a student project in history or local
culture. The price is reasonable for the tremendous
value of the information and research contained therein.
Purchase this book for the student in your house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource of local history, January 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There are many books that discuss Bronx history. There are few books that give you the no nonsense information you want. This is one of those few. While it is not the most attractive format, it gives you the history of every street name in the Bronx. An indispensable resource for the local historian. A bit pricey, but given the specialized data, well worth the price.
