Simon Schama tells history as a chronological series of vignettes in the lives of great figures and the momentous events that surrounded them. Characters are seen warts and all--faintly comical, cruel, or heroic--with an eye for detail suggestive of Dickens, Cruikshank, or Hogarth. The breadth and music of Schama's language reward the thoughtful engagement of listeners. Narrator Stephen Thorne, whose voice is as rich as Victorian mahogany, evokes the full grandeur of the British experience. This work testifies to the enormous educational potential of audio.
