Book Description

February 7, 1995 0226316378 978-0226316376 1
The monumental History of Cartography is an unprecedented survey of the development of cartography both as a science and an art. This essential reference presents the enormous value of maps to societies worldwide and explores the many ways they have been used to depict the earth, sky, and cosmos from ancient times to the present.

Volume 2, book 2, considers the cartographic traditions of China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Tibet, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Philippines, presenting significant new research and interpretation of archaeological, literary, and graphic sources. Richly illustrated with forty color plates and over five hundred black and white illustrations, the book includes a number of rare and elaborate maps, many previously unpublished.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good guide for Oriental geographical culture, September 2, 2009
This review is from: The History of Cartography, Volume 2, Book 2: Cartography in the Traditional East and Southeast Asian Societies (Hardcover)
This series is one of the best academic works for the historical research in the development of cartography of the world. Although for Western world we have many classical works in this field, for Eastern world, except for China, Korea and Japan, we have no good work to be read. This volume is the best guide for this field written in English. Especially for Southeast Asian countries this may be the first academically organized comprehensive history. A lot of beautiful plates printed in large size are good materials for advanced study for this field.
