Xbox 360: Nice, but could be better,

I received this game as a gift for Christmas from my wife. I played the heck out of it for a few days and still pick it up from time to time.
It's not a bad game....but it could be a lot better. Coming from playing the Call of Duty series, it makes the CW: Secrets Missions look like a cheap knock-off. It's not. It's actually an ok game but is definitely not the same caliber as Call of Duty. For instance, the AI is ok but not great, and the graphics standing-still are pretty good, but there is some noticeable flicker and pop-up. Sound and dialogue are pretty good but the 'screams' and 'yells' get really annoying after a while; it's always the same person screaming, and it sounds overly rehearsed. Graphics: A- (pop-up and frame-rate are poor; good detail otherwise) Sound: C+ (ok dialogue, annoying screams/yells...overly rehearsed actors) Gameplay: B+ (decent) Fun: B- (...not bad, could be better. Easy way to kill 30min-1hr. Don't worry, I rated Call of Duty 3 worse than this) All in all, I'd say CW: Secret Missions is worth $20 but not much more than that; if you can grab it used, even better! :)

The History Channel's Civil War: Secret missions is their second Civil War video game. If you played the first (A Nation Divided) you will notice many improvements, especially in AI soldiers. AI infantry ducks and covers, avoids being shot at much better than in the first. Otherwise the perameters are similar: levels involve clearing enemies and destroying targets. There is a gatling gun and naval mission.
Overall the missions are longer than the first Civil War game, but it keeps much of the flavor of the original. Secret Missions places you in some of the most important and pivotal moments of the Civil War and in a way that few games can realize, makes you get up and close with your opponents because your weapons have limited range, limited ammo, and relatively long reload times. It must have been a brutal war. Of course there would be SO MUCH MORE that could be done with the game. I can only imagine larger battlefields if there were a multiplayer (you and buddies to practice volley firing, charging en masse with bayonets), but alas this is not possible. This is enjoyable afternoon on easy and can be quite a challenge on higher levels. Anyone with connections over at History Channel, let them know: the game is a blast but multiplayer would have made it possible to truly re-create some of the greatest moments of the Civil War (Third installment please????)

Bought this for my son in law for Christmas! It was a PRIORITY on his "Wish List" :)
He's been enjoying it whenever he has extra time to play! He's a History buff! Anyone that likes History would enjoy this too :) Money well spent!!

This games surprised me very well. You are taught alot about the batttles of the civil war during your time in school as a child, but this game had historical information that I never heard about. I always heard about the major points of all the epic battles (Gettysburg, Pickets charge, etc) but this game showed me those not so glorified (secret) missions that were just as important as the main battle that took place. I highly recommend this game to any school aged child who is studying the Civil War.

It's really fun to try the different weapons but the amount of unique game play is very short. Expect to have a lot of fun playing this for a couple of hours but then leave it on a shelf

These 'games' should be played more with the idea you are educating yourself on Civil War topics -not on the adventure/action/gameplay involved....
Yes, the first one had its good and bad points. As does 'secret missions'. SM the fighting flows better I noticed a lot less hand to hand and more sniper type missions. This game reminded me also of one called 'Marine:sharpshooter' which was an average easy jungle path trail where you constantly happen upon enemies and, as the game progresses, they get harder, etc. Though, what was nice about SM there was more 360 travel and the environments are nice, but there could have been more treasure hunting. Being that its based upon Civil War reenactments, maybe that sort of thing wasn't going on!lol. The game gets pretty easy if send your grenades with accuracy and sharpshooting. There is a lot less dialog. Both games seemed to have a sort of slow, stiff feeling when traveling or turning fast In Nation Divided, the fighting was frustratingly slow with the muskets and reloading and hand to hand(especially if you're used to the future shooter stuff)But once you get used to it, you get through the games with no real climax other than feeling you saw what was hopefully a good recreate of what really took place in the civil war :( In my opinion, the 'civil war' idea is a great one for gaming and it still untapped for something really long and brutal and epic in the NEW gaming industry!MOH 'rising sun' was always one of my favorites! There's so much new/other stuff out there BLOWING this away in the war game genre. Hope this |
