THE LATTER-DAY SAINTS' "OFFICIAL" HISTORY,
By
This review is from: History of the Church (Set of 7 Volumes & Index, LDS, Mormon) (Paperback)
This 7-book series (aka "Documentary History of the Church") is the official history (written between 1839 and 1856) of the early Latter Day Saint movement during the lifetime of founder Joseph Smith, Jr. It is largely composed of Smith's writings and interpolations and editorial comments by Smith's secretaries, scribes---and, after Smith's death, by Church historians. This set should not be confused with the later 6-volume "Comprehensive History" by B.H. Roberts (A Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 6 Volume Set plus Index (Box Set).
Here are some quotations from the set (by Volume #, then page): "While he was conversing with me about the plates, the vision was opened to my mind that I could see the place where the plates were deposited." (V1, pg. 13) "After I went to live with him, he took me... to dig for the silver mine... Hence arose the very prevalent story of my having been a money-digger." (V1, pg. 17) (About the lost 116 pages) "...being commanded of the Lord that I should not translate the same over again, for Satan had put it into their hearts to tempt the Lord their God, by altering the words, that they did read contrary from that which I translated and caused to be written..." (V1, pg. 56) "Thus were we persecuted on account of our religious faith---in a country which guarantees every man the indefeasible right to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience..." (V1, pg. 97) "In these infant days of the Church, there was a great anxiety to obtain the word of the Lord upon every subject..." (V1, pg. 207) "Brother (Martin) Harris did not tell Esq. Russell that Brother Joseph (Smith) drank too much liquor while translating the Book of Mormon, but this thing occurred previous to the translating of the Book; (Harris) confessed that his mind was darkened, and that he had said many things inadvertently, calculated to wound the feelings of his brethren, and promised to do better." (V2, pg. 26) "...for we are differently situated from any other people that ever existed upon this earth; consequently those former revelations cannot be suited to our conditions..." (V2, pg. 52) "The remainder of this month, I was continually engaged in translating an alphabet to the Book of Abraham, and arranging a grammar of the Egyptian language as practiced by the ancients." (V2, pg. 238) "Thus I have given a brief history of the manner in which the writings of the fathers, Abraham and Joseph, have been preserved, and how I came in possession of the same---a correct translation of which I shall give in its proper place." (V2, pg. 350-351) "Apostasy, persecution, confusion, and mobocracy stove hard to bear rule at Kirtland, and thus closed the year 1837." (V2, pg. 529) "Consequently he (Oliver Cowdery) was considered no longer a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." (V3, pg. 17) "...the Council held that the charges were sustained, and consequently considered David Whitmer no longer a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." (V3, pg. 19) "I replied, that I professed to be nothing but a man, and a minister of salvation, sent by Jesus Christ to preach the Gospel." (V3, pg. 201) "Truth is 'Mormonism.' God is the author of it." (V3, pg. 297) "I give you my servant Joseph, to be a presiding elder over all my church, to be a translator, a revelator, a seer, and prophet." (V4, pg. 284) "The best way to obtain truth and wisdom is not to ask it from books, but to go to God in prayer, and obtain divine teaching." (V4, pg. 425) "I commenced publishing my translations of the Book of Abraham in the 'Times and Seasons'..." (V4, pg. 520) "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has also had its false spirits..." (V4, pg. 580) "But brethren, the Temple will be built." (V4, pg. 591) "Ever since the formation of the Church... calumny, reproach and persecution have flown plentifully into their lap... they have been assailed by vexatious law suits, organized mobs, and illegally treated by militia; they have been imprisoned, whipped, tarred and feathered, and driven from their homes; they have had their property confiscated, and have suffered banishment, exile and death for their religion." (V5, pg. 98-99) "Elder Hyde inquired the situation of the negro. I replied, they came into the world slaves, mentally and physically. Change their situation with the whites, and they would be like them. They have souls, and are subjects of salvation." (V5, pg. 217) "The teachers of this day say that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God, and they are all in one body and one God... If I were to testify that the Christian world were wrong on this point, my testimony would be true." (V5, pg. 426) "I am above the kingdoms of the world, for I have no laws." (V5, pg. 526) "I hold the keys of this power in the last days; for there is never but one on earth at a time on whom the power and its keys are conferred; and I have constantly said no man shall have but one wife at a time, unless the Lord directs otherwise." (V6, pg. 46) "I combat the errors of ages... God is my 'right hand man.'" (V6, pg. 78) "We are now the most noble people on the face of the globe..." (V6, pg. 299) "My enemies say that I HAVE been a true prophet. Why, I had rather be a fallen true prophet than a false prophet." (V6, pg. 364) "I told Stephen Markham that if I and Hyrum were ever taken again we should be massacred, or I was not a prophet of God. I want Hyrum to live to avenge my blood, but he is determined not to leave me." (V6, pg. 546) "If my life is of no value to my friends it is of none to myself." (V6, pg. 549) "I am going like a lamb to the slaughter... If they take my life I shall die an innocent man... and it shall be said of me, 'He was murdered in cold blood!'" (V6, pg. 555) "I would to God that I could preach to the Saints in Nauvoo once more." (V6, pg. 601) "An attempt was made to break open the door, but Joe Smith being armed with a six-barrelled pistol, furnished by his friends, fired several times as the door was bursted open, and wounded three of the assailants... Joe Smith now attempted to escape by jumping out of the second story window, but the fall so stunned him that he was unable to rise... they dispatched him with four balls shot through his body. Thus fell Joe Smith, the most successful imposter in modern times." (V7, pg. 31) "The blood of saints is the seed of the church. It will be considered by an extensive portion of the world that the Smiths have suffered martyrdom for their religion, and their profoundest sympathies will be aroused..." (V7, pg. 181) "...the Prophet has sealed his testimony with his blood." (V7, pg. 263) "There is ... much disposition amongst the brethren to seek after power ... In consequence of such feelings Joseph [Smith] left the people in the dark on many subjects of importance and they still remain in the dark." (V7, pg. 545)
