5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting personal account, December 28, 2007
By
This review is from: History of Company K: 1st (Inft,) Penn'a Reserves "The Boys Who Fought at Home" (Paperback)
Small book at a small price. I purchased the book because a relative fought in Company K. Therefore, I was thrilled to find this individual mentioned several times in the book. In fact, the book conatins information on every original member of the company. It is written by one of the company commanders and is a very brief account of this particular unit, including how the members fought around their homes at Gettysburg. As noted in the forward, "it is clearly designed...for his comrades and their families rather than a unit history." One wishes that the author would have added much more detail about the company's experiences. The book does include several short 'human interest' type stories about the company. One of these is the author's account of sneaking into Gettysburg to visit his family on the night of July Third. Any reader with an interest in the Civil War should find this short history of one volunteer company interesting and entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book about REAL people...makes the Civil War Personal, October 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: History of Company K: 1st (Inft,) Penn'a Reserves "The Boys Who Fought at Home" (Paperback)
This is a good book about the reality of Civil War soldiers. Written by their beloved captain, who later became a Methodist minister, this book seeks to capture the hearts of all. The book was written mainly for the men and their descendents, and though one sometimes gets the feeling that there's some "inside joke," it is a good read about real people. I recommend this book to anyone seriously interested in the Civil War. It is a better, more interesting read than may company histories, although it does at times seem like a yearbook.
