I bought this book years ago when I first visited Reno, Nevada and Virginia City's Comstock mines. Years have passed and I'm buying again because of all the books every written on the Comstock, this book has it all. If you want to know what it really was like in those mines, read this book.

A really good thorough book that covers geology, personalities, mine records and production, etc...
It does give a different view of the people, principally Mackay, in painting him in a very good light.
The only thing that really seemed to be missing -that other authors dwell on- was the corruption and law suits. Reading this books made me think that the Comstock wasn't as evil and scandalous a place as it has been purported to be. Best book on the Comstock so far - but was it an accurate portrayal? None will ever know as so many different accounts exists of people's personalities and doings. However, this book made me realize that a lot of what modern authors report as scandalous, was considered at the time completely legitimate and fair.
