Controller. Controller Stays In Your Head,
By A Customer
This review is from: History (Audio CD)
Riviting, dark yet catchy and definately good to dance to. This music is set to capture a whole new audience and maybe a few older ones too. Controller, Controller seems to be reaching for something different, yet there is a sense that you've known them before. The beat is some times a little repedative, the lyrics a little dry but the music stays in your head and you can't stop singing. Go ahead, try if you dare. They're here and things can only get better! Good Luck Controller. Controller

And I'm not a dancer. Anyway, I first heard Controller.Controller live when they were playing for free at UofT's frosh week concert. I was really getting into their music. So, I picked up their EP and it's amazing. Great energy, great beats/grooves. If you like music by Metric or Franz Ferdinand I think you would like Controller.Controller. This album is obviously too short and the only thing I would say is that their tracks are all fast on this (because it's their EP). Their new album "X-Amounts" comes out TOMORROW (October 11th, 2005). I'm hoping that it's amazing. Check this out, people!

controller.controller's live shows have been wowing the stationary arm crossed Toronto hipsters for the last year. Finally, their album History is here. It will make you want to dance. Reminds you of Liars, Gang of Four, Joy Division and the rapture with it's steady beats, strong bass lines and gangleing guitars. Vocals are dark and brooding without being depressing. I recommend you see them live though, the album only catches a glimps of what is controller.controller.

Highly recommend this purchase. Great to just sit back and place on repeat. Darkish, but with plenty of energy.

Good live shows do not always translate into a good e.p.,

For someone who despises dancing, and hates dance music almost as much I find it peculiar how apt I am to being into dance/punk or the dance/rock style of music that has been becoming more and more popular in the last few years. The first such band that I really started to listen to is The Rapture, but it didn't stop at that. Then came The Music, just recently the Bloc Party, and now you can add to that list some Canadian content with Controller, Controller. When people are comparing the success of your E.P. to Age Of Electric's "Ugly", and Sam Roberts "The Inhuman Condition" that is high praise for a Canadian band. Controller, Controller's style of music is a kinda dance/rock/punk style that is as contagious as the common cold. It is no wonder they are building such a quick following, and are doing so well touring. Face it, people love to dance and for those who like good music and dancing this is one of those rare bands that are able to fuse those two things together without drifting into the regions of lame. If you want a band to compare it to think Metric in terms of the vocals, but way less alternative and therefore way more catchy and mainstream friendly. Or at least that is what we are to believe... The debut E.P. is seven songs and around 24 minutes long, but it has served the purpose the band wanted. People know who Controller, Controller is and many of those people are salivating for a full length release. I anticipate huge sales for it if they bring it out soon enough to take advantage of the buzz that has been created. Even the American monster that is pitchforkmedia gave Controller, Controller much love scoring their E.P with an 8.2 and showering it with kind words. In fact if you search the web you will be hard pressed to find a review that doesn't praise "History". If you are into that whole post punk movement, then you will be into Controller, Controller and of that I have no doubt. "History" is the first real track of the E.P. and also happens to be the title of the E.P. as well. This song opens with serious bass, and then some rythmic symbal action and of course like every dance/punk song a sweet guitar riff to move with. This was a good choice as any to begin with, as it serves the purpose of getting you moving right away. Personally I find the song to be lacking something. I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it is too repetitive? Maybe it is too formulaic? But something is missing, and since I have listened to the disc a few times in a row to get a better idea how to review it I have noticed more and more holes in the sound. A bit like a shiney new car that looks great on the lot but once you get to drive it the appeal starts to dwindle. If the purpose of the song is to provide a sweet beat, and a trance like sound that you can bust your but for five minutes on the dance floor too and know all the words at the show then it works. I just don't buy that as being a viable purpose. I went into this review expecting to say quality things about Controller, Controller. However, the more I heard the harder that became. Up until today I had heard the album about four times and had done so spread out over a few weeks, and in that type of dosage it is actually quite effective. It works well for background music, but when it is you and the music and nothing else quite frankly it doesn't hold up. I still think they are going to blow up when they release their first full length but it will not be because of talent. It will be because people love the idea of rocking out and dancing so much that they are willing to overlook that most of the time you can interchange any of the songs for each other and nobody would notice. They came up with one great song, and six songs that look, taste, and smell a lot like one another. If you look up one dimensional in the dictionairy of music you might just find this album cover. I reluctantly hold out hope they will develop out of this trap, but won't be eager to spend any money to find out in the future. Maybe you will, but be forewarned. Songs you should download: "History", "Disco Blackout", "Watch" SCORE: 6.25 (That's right I did it! I value originality very very highly in music. The same reason that this E.P. leaves a bad taste in my mouth is why I listen to very little of the music today that i did in highschool. It was just too repetitive. If i wanted to hear the same song again and again i'd buy the single and loop it!)
