By the end of 1943, America's Pacific D-Days were being mounted with new expertise and power. The enemy found himself in amphibious pincers, with Admiral Nimitz attacking through the central Pacific and General MacArthur thrusting from the southwest. MacArthur would execute more Pacific D-Days than any other commander. But his landings did not come against small atolls. He began, as do we in this episode, with the reconquest of the immense island of New Guinea, where he had been defending against the invading Japanese since the war's early days, and cover activities up to the bloody assault on Peleliu.
