DAVE CLARK 5's CLAIM TO ROCK `N ROLL FAME
The Dave Clark 5 were a British Invasion phenomenon and probably the loudest British Invasion act until the arrival of the Who. The Dave Clark 5's first major hit was 1964's 'Glad All Over' the first of 24 records in Billboard's Top 100 and 17 Top 40 hit records between 1964 and 1967. The Dave Clark 5 was the second British Invasion act to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show - the Beatle's were the first act to do so. Their 18 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show eclipsed both the Beatle's and the Rolling Stones. The Dave Clark 5 band members were: *Dave Clark - vocals, drums, percussion *Mike Smith - vocals, piano, organ *Lenny Davidson - vocals, acoustic & electric guitars *Denis Payton - vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, tenor & baritone saxophones *Rick Huxley - vocals, acoustic guitar, bass The Dave Clark Five's most popular Billboard Top 100 Hits were: *Glad All Over - Jan. 1964 *Bits And Pieces - Feb.1964 *Do You Love Me - April 1964 *Can't You See That She's Mine - June 1964 *Because - July 1964 *Everybody Knows - Sept. 1964 *Any Way You Want It - Nov. 1964 *Come Home - Jan. 1965 *I Like It Like That - June 1965 *Catch Us If You Can - July 1965 *Over And Over - Oct. 1965 *Everybody Knows - Dec. 1967 50 TRACK LISTING for HISTORY OF THE DAVE CLARK 5 DOUBLE CD DISC 1: 1. Dave Clark Five stars,

Glad All Over is a good title to start off this collection.
One thing that DC5 were very good at was entertainment. A very tight group in the 60s that were at the fore of the British Invasion. While often mixed in with Merseybeat groups, they actually hailed from north London. It is too bad that this collection is no longer being made. The collection is one of the best of groups from this era. The earliest songs are the strongest from high octane "Glad All Over," "Any Way You Want It" and "Catch Us If You Can" to excellent soft melodies like "Because" and "Whenever Your Around." Lesser known "Do You Still Love Me" and Don't Be Taken In" present Mike Smith's superlative vocals and Dave Clark's clever drumming. The latter songs are a drop off from the earlier collection, but then again, the music scene changed drastically between 1966 and 1967 and so ended the period with what they called "Acid music" back then. DC5 were probably smart to move on, which is what Dave Clark mentions in the liner notes. Although, it is forgotten that their hits rivalled all the others, including the Beatles, they toured in their own plane and Clark turned the music into a lucrative business, still a problem for pop musicians, despite what you see in the pop press. If you want THE collection for DC5, this is it. It includes an extensive liner note booklet.

DO YOU LOVE ME!,

Until, if ever the full DC5 collection is released on CD this will have to suffice. Listening to this collection in the context of mid 1960's, it is easy to see why the DC5 rivaled the Beatles for best Rock/Pop band. Unfortunately, their time was brief in retrospect. Their hard driving "mono" recordings were unique at the time. I still get the adrenaline rush listening to "Any way you want it", "Try too hard", "Nineteen Days", "Bits and Pieces", "Catch us if you can", "You've got what it takes", "Do you love me", etc. One listen to "Do you love me" and you will realize why the DC5 version of this song is the definitive one.

The most underated rock group in music history,
By Aaron (USA) - See all my reviews

In 1964-1965, the DC5 were very close behind the Beatles in popularity. It WASN'T because they were British. It was because they were EXTREMELY talented. Lead singer Mike Smith is one of the best singers of all time. the DC5 was probably the closest England came to producing a Motown group. Not only are the hits excellent (especially Anyway You Want It&Try Too Hard) but the B-sides&LP cuts were also top-notch (Whenever You're Around, Look Before You Leap, Concentration Baby, At The Place, Inside&Out, among others) A first rate collection from a first rate band.

This is a good collection of 50 hits, b-sides and album tracks by The Dave Clark Five. The only US hit that is missing is "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby". There are a few UK hits missing, but that is understandable, since this collection was designed for the US market. The songs are in mono, with the exception of the last three songs which are in stereo. Most of the songs here are great, so I highly recommend getting this collection (if you can find it).

Overlooked British Invasion,
By
This review is from: The History of the Dave Clark Five (Audio CD)
The Dave Clark Five still can be heard on the oldies stations, and rightly so. Although they don't have the prestige of other British Invasion bands (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and The Who), they have some songs with the greatest trajectory of any thumping, groovy band. This collection is uneven, but the first tape is superb. The selection includes such propulsive classics as "Glad All Over," "Anyway You Want It," and a great remake of "Do You Love Me". The ballads shouldn't be dismissed, either, but they're not as accomplished as their fast songs.
The second C.D./tape has some worthy pieces, including "I Like It Like That," "Over and Over," and "You've Got What It Takes". The last portion sags, somewhat. (Although "Doctor Rhythm" and "Here Comes Summer" are virtually unknown gems.) "Live in the Sky" is interesting for its bitter sarcasm, taking aim at Psychedelia, the movement that left the band behind. In the liner notes, it is aptly stated that Mike Smith is one of the most underrated singers in rock history. The same could be said of the band.

Their Greatest Hits on CD,
By
This review is from: The History of the Dave Clark Five (Audio CD)
The Dave Clark 5 in the 60's was actaully the top rival to the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones.
For years I tried to find a good Dave Clark 5 CD, and finally here it is. This CD is loaded with their hits including, Glad All Over, Bits and Pieces, Do You Love Me, Cant You See that She's Mine, Because, Any Way You Want It, Everybody Knows I Still Love You, Catch Us If You Can, Try Too Hard, I Like it Like That, Over and Over, and Everybody Knows. As you can see by this list they have quite a few hits during the 60's Its a shame that a group that was so popular in the 60's is no longer available on CD. The Dave Clark 5 will always be remembered as a great British band, and very talented at that. I am a collector of British Invasion music, and this is one of my favorite albums. If you like the music of Britian in the 60's this is a must for your collection. The Dave Clark 5 were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Their election was long overdue, and well earned. Unfortunately as many bands of the British Invasion are now losing memebers, the Dave Clark 5 only have 3 remaining members. Its mind boggling to know they were on Ed Sullivan over 40 years ago......

One Of The Second Tier Of The British Invasion,
By AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The History of the Dave Clark Five (Audio CD)
The group portion of the famous (or infamous) British Invasion, which began with a trickle in 1962/63 and then exploded in 1964, was led of course by The Beatles and Rolling Stones. They were the two sharp edges of the spearpoint and all the rest made up the shaft. Among those comprising the trailing shaft were groups like The Animals, Herman's Hermits, Chad & Jeremy, Manfred Mann, Peter & Gordon, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Mindbenders, and Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas.
But of these, the one that presents the most trouble for hits collectors like myself is The Dave Clark Five. Just sift through the various CDs available for this Tottenham-based group and you'll see that none are generally available at the moment (and haven't been for some time), and none among the ones being offered as used items contain all 24 hit singles they had in North America. Not one. This one came the closest, but even with two discs it manages to leave out their third hit single over here (I Knew It All The Time - a 1963 recording that hit # 53 Billboard Hot 100 in May 1964 and the only one not released on Epic - it was a Congress release), along with three of their last four hits in North America: You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby - a Top 40 at # 35 in the summer of 1967; A Little Bit Now - a # 67 in August 1967; and Red And Blue - a # 89 in November 1967. Something else worth noting about The Dave Clark Five is that, unlike most of the others among the British Invasion with multiple hits (over 10), not once did they have a double-sided hit. The closest they came to that was in 1965 when I'm Thinking, the flip of Reelin' And Rockin' (# 23 in May), reached # 128 on the Hot 100 "bubble under" charts, and in 1966 when Look Before You Leap, the B-side to Please Tell Me Why (# 28 in June/July), made it to # 101 on those same charts. Even so, you have to wonder why an outfit like Bear Family or Ace, or even Rhino, Eric or Collectables, have not come up with a definitive 30-track CD of their best containing all 24 North American hits and six select B-sides, especially now that they've been inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame. In the meantime, this remains your best bet if you can afford a used copy at the price currently being shown (which is a bit ridiculous).

The Dave Clark Five were one of the best rocking British Invasion Bands of the fabulous sixties. The DC5 produced 14 top twenty hit singles between 1964 and 1967. The DC5 also released 14 albums in the States between 1964 and 1967. The DC5 sold 35 million records in their career between 1964-1970. Dave Clark owned and leased his recordings to Epic Records in the USA, and EMI in the UK. Dave also produced all of their tracks, and the boys toured the world between 1964 and 1967. The DC5 decided to retire in 1970. However, Dave Clark and Mike Smith continued for a few years as Dave Clark & Friends. Today Dave is a top producer and owns the rights to the British TV series 'Ready Steady Go'. The other members; Mike Smith, Lenny Davidson, Denny Payton, and Rick Huxley are all doing well in their respective careers outside music. There still exists a DC5 fan club called 'Bits & Pieces'. Email - john.briggs@which.net For lovers of Rock & Roll, The History of The Dave Clark Five is a must have for everyone's CD collection. The collection fits nicely alongside greatest hits collections by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sly & The Family Stone, The (Young) Rascals, and Paul Revere & The Raiders. You won't be disappointed. Get it!
