Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book by Richard B. Welbourn, one of the world's most distinguished endocrine surgeons, will not disappoint those who were aware of its preparations and were eagerly awaiting its publication. . . . The author . . . quotes Billroth in his preface who said, 'Only the man who is familiar with the art and science of the past is competent to aid in its progress in the future.' This book was conceived with that purpose for all of those with interest in endocrinology and surgery of the endocrine glands, and details this fascinating story from its origins until about 1980. . . . This is a book that all physicians would enjoy and profit from reading. It is must reading for surgeons with an interest in endocrinology and the same could equally apply to endocrinologists.”–Annals of Surgery

“. . . Labour of love. . . . Packed with information -biographical - evolutionary . . . . The reader will be enthralled by the pioneering efforts of so many giants. . ." J. A. van Heerden, M.D. (Mayo Clinic) World Journal of Surgery ". . . Meticulously researched, thorough and complete. . . . Knowledge in its direction and emphasis. . . . Obligatory starting point for amateurs and professionals. . . . Very useful book, comfortable to read and efficient to consult. . . . Finest bibliography of any discipline's development. . . .”–Sherwin B. Nuland, M.D. (Yale)
