English as She Should Be Taught,
By Joyce (Santa Cruz County, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: History of the English Language (The Teaching Company) 18 CD Set (Audio CD)
As a prior reviewer as pointed out, this is a long course (about 18 hours of listening), but well worth it. Every English/Lit teacher, every ESL/TESL teacher, journalist/novelist would benefit from this course (gift idea!!!!!). Listening to it while one drives, rides, flies, or works out would be an excellent way to get through the course. After all, it is a "real" course and could be of benefit to almost anyone who cares about our language. Worth mentioning: The three course guidebooks are lessons in themselves (excellent outlines). As with any course published by The Teaching Company, you should not be disappointed.

This is an excellent course on the history of the English language. It is a very in depth study of the origins and history of English. I was especially impressed with the professor's command of the language and knowledge. It is very long (36 30min lectures)so don't expect to get through it quickly. I listened to it while traveling in my car. It is very well done.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: History of the English Language (The Teaching Company) 18 CD Set (Audio CD)
A few months ago, I bought "The story of human language", also from the teaching Company. I have become addicited to that series, and have listened to the CD's four or five times, every time finding something new.
I bought "The history of the English language" thinking that I would follow in the same mood. What a disappointment! The lecture is, to be polite, boring and pedantic. I catch myself, more often than not, drifting away when I listen to the CD's. This is one that I will not keep.
