Informative read for all
I was working on a paper dealing with folk music and this is truly the best book on the subject that I found! It is an excellent review of the history of ethnomusiclogy as well as of the evolution of various folk music styles. It also provides some interesting answers in the area of comparative musicology. Good information, bad translation and organization
Firstly, it's not really a history of European folk music. It's more of a survey. That said, there's a lot of great information, including historic and more recent research in ethnomusicology. I enjoyed the book and found it very useful. Two caveats: the organization of the book is rather unhelpful, and the translation can be quite awkward.

I was working on a paper dealing with folk music and this is truly the best book on the subject that I found! It is an excellent review of the history of ethnomusiclogy as well as of the evolution of various folk music styles. It also provides some interesting answers in the area of comparative musicology. No other book can compare in the scope that is covered here. It is highly readable even for people who have no knowledge of the subject matter!
