Book Description

Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444), the leading civic humanist of the Italian Renaissance, served as apostolic secretary to four popes (1405-1414) and chancellor of Florence (1427-1444). He was famous in his day as a translator, orator, and historian, and was the best-selling author of the fifteenth century. Bruni's History of the Florentine People in twelve books is generally considered the first modern work of history, and was widely imitated by humanist historians for two centuries after its official publication by the Florentine Signoria in 1442.

This third volume concludes the edition, the first to make the work available in English translation. It includes Bruni's Memoirs, an autobiographical account of the events of his lifetime, and cumulative indexes to the complete History.

5.0 out of 5 stars History Like It Should Be, June 4, 2010
This review is from: History of the Florentine People, Volume 3: Books IX-XII. Memoirs (I Tatti Renaissance Library) (Hardcover)
I was very pleased with this three volume history of Florence. First, the stories in here are interesting and well-told. Bruni carefully weighs his sources like a modern historian, but he has an eye for the color and drama which make the best history books so enjoyable. Second, this is an excellent background for the general study of medieval and Renaissance literature, especially for Dante enthusiasts. Third and finally, the I Tatti Renaissance Library have once again produced a handsome book with solid binding and a beautiful blue cover. Plus, you get the original Latin text along with an elegant English translation by James Hankins and D.J.W. Bradley. If you like history generally, history written in the idiom of Livy, good anecdotes, or are curious about the Florentine world that lies behind many great artists and thinkers, then you can't go wrong with this book.
