The Glider Pilot Regiment, beginning as the first element of the new Army Air Corps in 1942 and disbanded in 1957, can probably claim to have been the smallest and shortest-lived Regiment ever to form part of the British Army. Nevertheless, in those few years the Regiment gained as much distinction other units took hundreds of years to achieve.

The German use of gliders at Eban Emael pointed the way for the Allies to deliver soldiers, vehicles and heavy weapons to the battlefield. The British Army, attempting to adapt itself to the needs of modern mechanized warfare, organized what would become the Glider Pilot Regiment following interservice wrangling as to who would be responsible for the training and selection of the pilots. British glider pilots were not just trained to pilot their unpowered aircraft to the landing zone but also to fight should-to-shoulder with the glider troopers. Unlike American glider pilots they could be rated on several types of aircraft and British glider pilots did not suffer from extensive periods of inactivity that their American brethren were subject to. Overall, a good book on this topic and the photos, drawings and maps help make this an excellent resource.
