Editorial Reviews

He writes with such verve and grasp, deftly passing over all that is inessential, that one is induced to reach again for one's Thucydides or Aristophanes.
–Mainzer Volksblatt

An original power of conceptualisation repeatedly opens up new perspectives, even in these well-known and much discussed areas of Greek literature, and provides the reader with a new wealth of learning as well as aesthetic enjoyment.
–Erich Thummer, Anzeiger fur Altertumswissenschaft

This translation of Dihle's 1991 publication offers a thorough literary history that reads more like a story than a handbook ... Especially uesful for those who want a broad understanding of the developments in Greek literature from Homer up to the time of Augustus.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Edward Yarborough on August 9, 2013
Format: Hardcover
Herr Dihle's book contains some interesting critical appreciations; its chief fault is that it is simply too brief to do justice to such a huge subject. Dihle's book is only 344 pages; by contrast, Gian Biagio Conte's "Latin Literature," which I consider an exemplary model for the entire literary history genre, is 864 pages. Any really big subject deserves big scale treatment, and that's why Dihle's short book is somewhat disappointing. Of course, its very brevity might make it appealing to readers who dislike tackling a big, heavy book; but you have to wonder: would any such anemic readers be interested in ancient Greek literature in the first place? (The earlier Greek literary history by Albin Lesky is both longer and, not coincidentally, much better.)
