Book Description

October 1, 2002
History, philosophy, legislation, and organizational structure are the basic cornerstones that enable readers to gain a thorough understanding of vocational and technical education. The History and Growth of Vocational Education in America is the first book to provide a relevant, up-to-date synthesis of all four study approaches. It provides an in-depth examination of such topics as gender, ethnicity, and special needs populations. The author also addresses the increasingly important role vocational education will play in meeting the needs of the aging "baby boom" workforce as they approach retirement. Readers seeking a career in this field will find a wealth of useful information on vocational student organizations, instructional programs and teacher preparation, and profiles of the leaders who have influenced vocational curriculum development. Chapter-by-chapter discussion questions and activities enhance the learning experience and provide further opportunities for research.

However, the history of vocational education has remained blurred in thousands of pages of reports, magazine articles, and other organized literature. But now Howard Gordon has achieved a milestone by writing a comprehensive and insightful book chronicling the history of vocational education. including its growth and transformation in American society. Howard Gordon, historian of the American Vocational Education Research Association, presents a unique book that has long been missing in the field of vocational education. This book details the history and growth of vocational education in the United States, from its roots in European educational theory to its refinement by Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois to its mounting importance for technological workforce preparation in the twenty-first century. The author presents in-depth study of the legislation and theory that shaped vocational education in the United States. Also included are the contributions of women and African-Americans.
