This review is from: The History Of Hebron New Hampshire: The First Two Hundred Years (Paperback)
The History of Hebron, NH: The First Two Hundred Years by Ronald W. Collins is based on two former pieces of writing, as the author states, but goes well beyond them to include more recent history. About a year ago, I researched and wrote about the life and work of one of Hebron's former residents, a remarkable woman named Ellen Webster. In having visited the town and having learned much about it, through Ellen's writings and activities there, as well as her own family genealogy, I am impressed by the quality of life there, as well as the quality of citizens the lovely town has brought forth.
Through the 247 pages, Collins offers up clear images, diagrams and charts that, together, serve to paint a picture of this seemingly quiet town. However, there is more that lurks beneath the surface. This is the first time I have read of the details of the murder of beloved town resident, Rodney Adams, or about his killer, who after serving a relatively short sentence, now walks free. After mentioning the more stalwart and visible town notables, on the back cover of the book, the author states, "All this from a town of less than five hundred souls for most of its history. Hebron is unique and splendid at the same time. Truly, an American treasure." For anyone who has purchased my comprehensive e-book about Ellen Emeline Hardy Webster, this book is a great interface. It utilizes information from "Recollections," a pamphlet-like, historical overview of Hebron, that, even though her name does not appear on the cover, Mrs. Webster is believed to have written, or perhaps, co-written with her friend, a school teacher on Tenney Hill. I really enjoyed viewing the list of place name origins. Hebron is quintessentially New England, at its best, located in an area that surrounds Newfound Lake, a popular tourist area. The History of Hebron is well worth adding to your personal library, if you are at all interested in New Hampshire History. Visually, it is a beautiful book, and the quality of information appears to be very good. |
