A multimedia CD-ROM for Windows and Macintosh, The History of the Highland Clans combines sixteen essays on various aspects of Highland history, society and culture with histories, heraldry and tartans of over 70 individual Scottish Highland clans. Interactive clan maps reveal the changing fortunes of each clan over time. Four sections - Clans - Essays - Maps - Gallery - are set out in a rich multimedia environment complete with original music. The essay section traces the evolution of the Highland clans from the earliest Gaelic settlement of Argyll in the 5th century AD until clanship's demise in the 18th century, and places it in the context of Scotland as a whole - explaining why clanship developed to the extent that it did particularly in the Highlands, and its links with Gaelic culture. Essays include: Ancient Peoples; Druids; Celtic Christianity; Somerled; the MacDonald Lordship of the Isles; the Highlands 1100-1700; Gaelic Literature; Highland Dress; Fosterage; and What is Clanship? The enigmatic period before 1700 is fully explored. The disc also contains the full contents of the first (and best) "clan book", the Victorian classic "The Clans of the Scottish Highlands" published by James Logan and R.R. McIan in the 1840s. A large image viewer displays clan and contemporary maps of Scotland and the Highland area from c.1000 - 1761. Primary source material includes a Description of the Isles in the 16th century; Gaelic poetry from the 8th to 18th centuries, including St Patrick's Breastplate, Pangur Ban, and The Birlinn of Clanranald. Easy to use interface and navigation tools. A special feature lets you install your favourite tartan on your computer's desktop as a wallpaper!
