Useful but extremely biased,

This review is from: History of Hindu-Christian Encounters (AD 304 to 1996) (Paperback)
As the title of this review suggests, this book was most helpful in illuminating aspects of Christian / Hindu contact that are less focussed on in typical chronologies. There are some enlightening quotes from primary characters and some good scholarly references integrated.Unfortunately, however, the whole book is written to depict a very one-sided view against Christianity. The author repeatedly makes vehemently anti-Christian remarks and chooses his sources selectively, omitting almost every instance of positive influence. Sweeping statements are another feature, drawing rash conclusions from a handful of select examples. If you are looking for an even-handed discussion then keep searching. If you seek a balance to the otherwise largely positive books on the subject then this is a good resource, but prepare to read as much between the lines as on them. Overall: helpful to the astute reader, but should come with the label "CAUTION: DO NOT SWALLOW" |
