Book Description

November 1990

"[A] weighty, erudite, but readily accessible general history of Hungary." —Library Journal

"An outstanding collection that is sure to become a standard work." —Choice

This unique collaboration of historians from Hungary, the United States, Canada, and Western Europe makes available to readers of English the best scholarship on the political, economic, social, and cultural development of Hungary from the prehistory of the Carpathian Basin and the origin of the Hungarian people through the transformation of communist Hungary into a multiparty republic in 1989. conceived as a comprehensive survey and reference work for students, teachers, and general readers, A History of Hungary is organized into chronological chapters, each written by the leading authority on that period.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Twenty eminent and sober historians (14 Hungarian, four American, one Canadian, one Austrian) have contributed their scholarship to this weighty, erudite, but readily accessible general history of Hungary. The volume has been carefully edited "in accordance with specified uniform guidelines" to avoid the disjuncture sometimes achieved by collections of essays, and the result is a successful introductory history aimed at collegiate undergraduates and better-informed or interested general readers. Chronology of coverage extends deep beyond Jorg Hoensch's History of Modern Hungary: 1867-1986 ( LJ 10/1/88), and the analyses coordinate nicely the political, military, social, and economic components of Hungary's long and colorful history. A helpful bibliography of reasonable proportions includes many English citations.

This review is from: A History of Hungary (Paperback)
As a 1st generation Hungarian American, I wanted to learn more about my history. This book gave me an excellent in depth overview of the tumultuous history of this often overlooked nation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent: authoritative and user-friendly, April 21, 1999

This review is from: A History of Hungary (Paperback)
This is the finest single-volume history of Hungary in the English language. Highly recommended work, by one of the most incisive historians of central and south-eastern Europe around.

1.0 out of 5 stars A politically correct History of Hungary, May 24, 2001
By
andrew bardos (Indian Hbr Bch, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A History of Hungary (Paperback)
This book, written during the communist era, mostly by people in high positions in that regime and their American fellow travelers, reflects that perspective. It is multicultural and politically correct.

Just one example of their sinister multicultural views. They talk about the six NATIONS that make up Hungary and complain about "Hungarian ambitions of hegemony," ignoring the history of how these minorities were allowed to settle in the country.

A great disappointment!
