I may be slightly biased as my own Gretsch Chet Atkins "Nashville" features in a few photos in this book, but even so I am astounded at the depth of knowledge Ed Ball has brought to this fine book. There is love and passion for his subject from page one, with little-known facts brought to the surface, a broad history of Fred Gretsch Jr, a decade-by-decade investigation of upgrades and changes to the marque, a look at the famous guitarists who have played it - including, of course, Chet Atkins - and many, many beautiful photographs of what must be one of the most beautiful guitars ever designed.

If you love guitars, you'll love thisbook.

What a beautifully done book about one of the most recognized guitars in Rock n' Roll history. THE GRETSCH 6120. I am a 6120 owner and this book is a phenominal companion to the guitar. The history of the guitar is well detailed and the photo's are beautiful. If you're a Gretsch owner you already know what I'm talking about. This one is not to be missed. WELL DONE!!!!

As a Gretsch fan from afar, Gretsch 6120 was recommended to me. Since receiving this great book, I now know the history of the full Gretsch line of Guitars. Ed Ball's attention to detail has enabled me to feel confident to purchase a vintage Gretsch or two, since I now know what to look for. Believe me, this book saved me some $$ with the depth of information. To be able to go to each specific batch of 6120's produced during the Golden Years is a tremendous resource. I am devouring it word-by-word to fully appreciate the amount of important info. If you are a vintage Gretsch guitar geek, BUY THIS BOOK!

The book is extremely well-researched and nicely presented. The main focus is on the development of the 6120, but the author provides a lot of interesting information on Gretsch history and production methods and covers many other models too, especially pre-Atkins models.

Mr. Ball has done what I have long hoped would be done for an iconic guitar other than a 'Burst or Strat -- an in-depth, scholarly treatment that is not simply a painstaking collation of detailed information but that tells a story and sheds light on why these guitars have an important place in our cultural history. This book provides an excellent model in how to present vintage guitar research.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Overview of the Gretsch 6120, December 14, 2010

This review is from: The History of the Legendary Gretsch 6120 (Hardcover)
As a proud owner of a 1957 Gretsch 6120, I was very anxious to read this book. I had read a review in Vintage Guitar magazine that piqued my interest.

I can say this is an excellent book. It is hard-cover, many color photos, printed on high-quality glossy stock.

It includes a comprehensive overview, year-by-year, of the genesis of this wonderful guitar. The opening chapters offer an introduction to the history of the guitar in general, and, the history of the Gretsch company. Further chapters offer a run-up to the development of the 6120 by reviewing the Gretsch models that preceded it. The book covers the crucial artist input from Chet Atkins necessary to make the model popular with the public.

The technical information is quite comprehensive, and, no detail is left out. Additionally, the author includes a web site that updates post-publication information, errata, etc. The book concludes with chapters on the present-day Gretsch company, and the models offerred.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone intereted in this guitar model, and electric guitars in general.

The Gretsch 6120 is a real classic guitar, and this wonderful book is destined to become a classic too ! Excellent narrative which covers the 6120 from the prototype, through the single cutaway versions of the 50's and very early 60's, to the double cutaway models, and ending up with the latest takes on this great axe. Loads of interesting facts will please anyone interested in Gretsch guitars, and the photos add the finishing touch to this excellent book. This book does a legendary guitar proud !
