Competent compilation of G&C's solo efforts,
By A Customer
This review is from: History Mix 1 (Audio CD)
Lol Creme and Kevin Godley are probably least known as solo recording artists, but they have released several albums that are entertaining at least and challenging at most (always great cover art, though). As their fifth album "Birds of Prey" was never released in the U.S., it was encouraging for Polydor to release "History Mix" here (as well as its wonderful follow-up "Goodbye Blue Sky"), to some success (including MTV play). Hardly all-inclusive, this collection would be hard-pressed to satisfy anyone: pedestrian listeners (non-fans) would know very few of the songs (most likely from the 10CC remix) while fans would disagree with the admittedly subjective selection. I look at it as a glorified 12" single, though the previous unavailability of several tracks on side two make it a must. I still hear this record played in hip-er clubs and bars. If you like English wit and Zappa, you'd enjoy any of G&C's albums (try "L" and "Goodbye Blue Sky" first, if you can find them). If you're an art student or into media production, find out more about these guys.

Song called CRY,

You CAN find the song CRY on the CD VH-1 Hits of the 80s. Their CD Crime and Punishment had some great tunes on it. Wish I could find the MP3 song, Crime and Punishment

Typical Tevor Horn Produced CD,
By
This review is from: History Mix 1 (Audio CD)
This is as much a Trevor Horn CD as it is a Godley and Creme CD.
This is one of those typical producer driven albums from the early days of CD's. It was in the days when digital processing and editing was becoming readily aviable, and the CD format, being 74 minutes long, opened up music to experimentation (in the early days of CD's the max time was 74 minutes-see below). The CD is about 55 minutes long and the sound quality is fair to poor(typical of early CD's). Trevor Horn is a musician/producer during the new wave/disco days, who started with Thomas Dolby, formed the Buggles (Video Killed the Radio Star-the first video shown on MTV), moved on to Yes and then became a full tim producer for many acts of the 1980's. He is responsible for much of the sound in the early 1980's. He produced Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and that is what this CD is most like. It is a disjointed collection for some questionable things and some really great moments. The first to tracks are around 17 minutes each and are a grouping of old 10CC/Godley and Creme songs, redited and mixed. Most of the stuff is in repetitive loops. This all might be good if it had an even tempo for dancing. Or if the music and songs were interesting, instead of just repetive loops. The last 5 minutes of the first track, is the wonderful song Cry. It got a big boost being featured on Miami Vice. Unfortunately, you have to listen to 12 minutes of junk to get to it. Fortunately, today we have computer software to rip the song and edit out all of the crap. Golden Boy is an OK song and in a similar vain to Cry. An Englishman in New York sounds like it could be the opening for a Broadway Musical. Save A Mountain For Me is like a soulful gospel number, but not very soulful. Other reviewers reference Frank Zappa when reviewing this CD. That is because one song starts out sounding like Brown Shoes Don't Make It and another sounds like Jewish Princess. The specified length of a CD is 74 minutes. This was the maximum length of CD's in the 1980's. The CD specification allows for tolerances in the sample rate and bit size, to allow for variations in manufacturing. If the maximum sample rate and minimum bit size are used, the CD can be stretched to 80 minutes. After a fews of CD production, it was found that the manufacturing process was so tight, it was possible to make CDs on the upper edge of the spec range.

Godley and Creme were one-half of the great 10cc. Their often zany, weird but approachable wit and overall musical and artistic procreativity contributed to make that band a supergroup. With their "The History Mix" solo outing, their genius is continued. "CRY" (also available on most current 10cc compilations) is gorgeous and fantastic - one of the most brilliantly conceived songs ever.

I have wanted this recording since I was in high school and I finally have it in CD. The only problem I have is that the CD cannot be read by my computer therefore I can't put it on my I=Pod. But the music is fantastic on the CD. One of the songs on the Godley and Creme CD I recently heard on a commercial. I so happy to see that this fantastic recording continues to be 'fresh'!
