A unique, illustrated work based on years of research including more than 550 exact-scale drawings and 100 photographs of varied ammunition and rare cartridge box labels. Contents include: pistol and revolver ammunition; file and machine gun ammunition; miscellaneous ammunition; conventional, experimental, and unidentified caliber ammunition. List of manufacturers. Table of model numbers. Bibliography. The research was carried out with the help of the Division of War Records of the National Archives in Washington, D. C., and Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, supplemented by other experts and by ammunition manufacturers. Hundreds of ordnance and arsenal design drawings were consulted, and in many cases experimental cartridges or components were examined before the fabrication state. Dimensions are given in most cases in the text and in the captions to the illustrations. Source references, where feasible, are given at the end of each chapter. Two addendums were later published in 1970 and 1972 and made available to those who purchased the First edition. Original title was: History of Modern U. S. Millitary Small Arms Ammunition Volume I: 1880-1939 ...This review refers to the First Edition Hard Cover published by MacMillan Co., New York in 1967 and titled, "History of Modern U. S.
