Product Description
What was this Morris tradition, entertainment, mystical rite, or some hybrid of the two? Where did it come from? After thirty years of dancing, teaching, and research, John Cutting attempts to answer these questions. From the earliest known references (1137 in Spain, 1448 in England) to the middle of the nineteenth century, Morris events are listed and examined. A parallel study looks at publications about Morris, from the Puritans down to the present day. Many illustrations portraying Morris or possible Morris dancers from the fourteenth century onwards are reproduced in the text.
