Book Description

August 1987
Eaton's classic work, the best one-volume survey of the Old South, examines Southern history from the perspective that both individuals as well as impersonal forces determine events. It is well-written, clearly argued, and extraordinarily intelligent.

4.0 out of 5 stars reference volume on The Early South, December 31, 2010
This review is from: History of the Old South: The Emergence of a Reluctant Nation (Paperback)
A really valid portrait of the South that has escaped many reviewers; if one is looking for a colorful, accurate evaluation of the mindset that permeated the "class" society and the driving economic power that human bondage ensured, a must read. Prof. Eaton is a marvelous writer for historians and for the general public.
