Editorial Reviews

Review

"Staten has accomplished much with this book. He has successfully condensed Cuba's convoluted past and present into a concise, readable history that still retains sufficient detail to be intellectually useful. His insight into the respective motivations of both Cuban and U.S. actors is especially poignant. This book is highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand the most misunderstood country in the Americas and its love-hate relationship with the United States."--Robert C. Harding, Lynchburg College

I walked into this book knowing virtually nothing about Cuba, and this book did an excellent job of providing a short overview of modern Cuba. The history begins with the war for independence from Spain, and proceeds through all of the revolutionary movements, through to Castro's takeover, the Soviet relationship with Cuba, and Castro's changing policies. I found it very enlightening, a quick read, and well worth an afternoon! I would have given it a higher rating if it had more unique information, but it keeps the readers interest, and gives a reasonable overview of the politics and economics of the country.

I am a Cuban American who came to the US in 1962 at a very young age, and with little knowledge about the history of my native country. I found this book very interesting and educating. I also found it sad.

I liked the organization of the history starting at precolumbian time until the early millennium. I would love to read an updated version with information on Cuba from that time until now.

Good background review of Cuban history, though a little too heavy on micro-details. Still, very useful introduction in preparation for further study.

Read this before heading to Cuba last year before it opened up to more tourists. It was helpful to review the past history, even though I had lived the revolution in the United States and remember it happening. I just didn't remember the sequence of events and this was a good review and background. I am sure more people will be going to Cuba now and this little primer is helpful to make what you see there mean more.
