History lesson indeed.,
By A Customer
This review is from: History Part 2: 93-96 The Rough And The Smooth (Audio CD)
'History..' isn't the sound that you'll hear from any of DB's newer releases. 'History..' captures the jungle/DnB at a unique moment in its history. It's a great lesson, like a Rosetta Stone from when techstep, jump-up, hardstep and jazz noir all start to differentiate. I'm not saying this point A and Roni Size or Grooverider and Dieselboy are points B. What you can hear on this album is this story where jungle/DnB was young enough that the spins are more important than slapping down labels on every sound. It's in that environment that innovation happens, and it's what DB captures so perfectly on this disc.

This was and still is the best example of the diversity within the Jungle scene. It has the best mix of everything that anyone could want. It has the unique ability to make you dance and/or calm you down... whichever you need at the moment... I have to say that this is a MUST BUY for anyone interested in the roots of Jungle...

I buy a ton of music; both vinyl and cd's. This is one of the most well rounded examples of drum n' bass around. If you're looking to hear great music and learn about the diversity of styles within the drum n' bass category this is the cd to start with. From track 15 on is some of the most beautiful drum n' bass I've heard.

In your body,

For anyone out there who's perhaps not familiar with language used by the Baltimore reviewer, i.e. not familiar with this kind of music...and just looking around for some new music....you must start here. I have journeyed through the drum-n-bass/jungle/whatever category you want to call it....and this CD has so much to offer. It's the kind of music that gets in your body and fills you up, you must get out of your chair, you must move around the room. Sexy, groovin, and it's definitely about a more visceral connection to sound and musical composition. This is the greatest background music for when I'm working in the studio, cooking, or just hanging out with my husband. It loosens you up, and makes you feel excellent. By the time you reach the end of the disc, you have truly taken a journey. Grows on you and grows on you.....

Truly a History Lesson,

For anyone interested in the origins of Drum and Bass, this is a great history lesson, as well as an excellent mix. DB takes some of the greatest anthems of the era and weaves them into a finely crafted mix that educated as much as it entertains. One can trace the transitions of early drum and bass -- from the crazy aggressive chopped up drums of the early days to the more smoothed out steppers of the latter years -- and see how these styles continue to influence the genre 10 years on.
The CD liner notes include the month and year each track was released, enabling one to easily place the tunes along a timeline. This helps emphasize the diversity of styles that coexisted at the time, as well as the rapid pace at which the genre was evolving. This mix is an essential buy for anyone who enjoys drum and bass, from the casual listener to the hardcore DJ.

I just got finished listening to this compilation for the first time and was very moved by the selection and mixing. Being a fan of DB's mixes and style of music, I was naturally attracted to this album. Just like the album cover says it's "Rough & Smooth" and extremely enjoyable--especially for any jungle fan. The smoothed-out jungle on the last couple of songs of the disc is probably the best I've heard yet, including LTJ Bukem. THIS IS A MUST OWN, even non-junglists can get down to a mix like this.

When I first heard this cd in early spring of '99, I was just entering into the rave scene, from that day forward I knew that drum & bass was for me! This CD is the best ever put together, the power and feeling behind it are absolutely incredible. It's one of those CDs that you can listen to from beginning to end and be completely satisfied. As a matter of fact, I recommend that the listener does listen to it from beginning to end, if not then the whole feeling behind the cd is almost lost. Finally, just buy the damn cd. Trust me it's well worth the money and effort.
