4.0 out of 5 stars Good study of pre-WW2 US, September 21, 2004
This review is from: History of Science in United States: An Encyclopedia (Garland Reference Library of Social Science) (Hardcover)
As a reference on its subject, it is perhaps best suited for the pre-WW2 period. The coverage of major scientists in that era is quite good. Many obscure entries that are now really only remembered by historians like Rothenberg.

Why the demarcation between pre-WW2 and later? Because American science changed radically after the US entered the US. With the seminal and successful Manhattan Project and the MIT Radar group, what emerged after the war was a much larger government involvement in science. Plus, other books on the postwar science give plenty of treatment on this. So much so that the prewar era of American science is relatively poorly treated and remembered.

Something this book tries to remedy.
