Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

THE HISTORY OF SHIPS provides the reader with a clear insight into how man has progressed from the first dug-out canoe (c. 500 BC), to the great ocean liners and modern warships of today. The book investigates the development of the materials used and the advances in power sources, from paddle to nuclear energy. The historic voyages of Cook and Columbus are also described and their significance examined. THE HISTORY OF SHIPS is lavishly illustrated with over 200 photographs and illustrations that help document the history of this highly romantic form of transport.

About the Author

The author of over twenty books on various aspects of naval and marine technology, together with major contributions to numerous journals, Bernard Ireland's first passion for things nautical began in Malta, where his father served with the Mediterranean Fleet. He went on to spend a working lifetime in ship research for the English Royal Navy, making significant contributions in the fields of modelling the extreme maneuvering of submarines and in remote-controlled minehunting. In both areas he has authored and presented technical papers at international symposiums. Recently retired, he now pursues a pastime of marine photography. He resides with his wife in England on the Hampshire coast.

This review is from: History of Ships (Hardcover)
I guess I missed something in the descriptions as I assumed this book would have some meat to it but I found it very shallow. I was expecting discussion of development of ships throughout history but this was glossed over and the book consists mostly of nice pictures with very little discussionof
