Gr 4-8-Stewart examines the origins and philosophy of this sport, traces the evolution of its rules and game strategy, and highlights some outstanding players. She also addresses the future of soccer, touching on fan behavior, facilities, and the influence of television revenue and other money on the game. Compared to Hugh Hornby's colorful Soccer (DK, 2000), this book's double-columned pages and its small black-and-white photos and reproductions have a utilitarian appearance. However, the relevant sidebars are a plus, and include discussions of racism in the sport and the boost to women's soccer during World War I. Extensive notes and charts of awards and statistics are appended along with a list of further reading and a somewhat dated bibliography. Supplemental fare for those needing a history rather than a "how-to" look at the sport.
