For anyone who knows art history books, this comes to a fair and close second to Gardner's Art Through the Ages. It is an excellent source and has the best parallel time lines. I especially appreciate the art guide at the beginning. For the beginner in art history, it would be best to start at Stokstad's work before cutting into Gardner's.
