Western-centric?,
By A Customer
This review is from: The History of Sweepstakes (Paperback)
The book takes a purely western view of gambling, which has its earliest roots in the ancient East. I think that that should have received greater recognition in the scope of study.

Kind of boring,

Not a very incisive view but to be honest I just found this book boring. Not very insiteful and not a real pageturner.

Somewhat wanting in detail,
By harry jorgenson (Uppamsville KY) - See all my reviews

I'm not college educated on this subject and I can't speak to the truths at large. Still, I found this book kind of lacking in the details. I really wish that the authors had taken the time to try to draw somemore substance into it before going and making conclusions.

Excelent history of Sweeepstakes,

This review is from: The History of Sweepstakes (Paperback)
This is one of the best history books written. It is on a very popular subject. This is not a book on "how to win sweepstakes". It is a throughly researched and scholarly study. If you are into reading match book covers you certainly do not have a slimmer of interest in such a book, in fact any book. I know for a fact that Curtin does not run a lottery service. Lotteries are only state run in this country, in fact in the world. If someone can point out one misleading statement in the book, please do. The fact is that there are none. In fact there are no tips in the book. It is a history book. Read this book and increase your knowledge of a very interesting segment of history.

No brainer,
By Jim Toddy (Pomona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The History of Sweepstakes (Paperback)
This is really a facile treatment of an extraordinarily complex subject. Sweepstakes "artists" can claim to be the first professionals. Indeed, records go back to early Myan times in the Americas, the 1st dynastic period in China, and to Ramses I in Egypt - basically as far back as written records. I really didn't get the sense that the individual writing knew the historical context as well as he should have.

Poorly written,
By A Customer
This review is from: The History of Sweepstakes (Paperback)
Factual matters aside, I found this book a very difficult read. It may be a definitive study in one sense, as it claims to be, but it is hardly the accessible material that it touts itself. I really think that they could have cut out a lot of the autobiographical stuff, for example, and stuck to their guns explaining the raw facts.
