Book Description

February 5, 2002 0252070666 978-0252070662
In this supplementary volume to his splendid history, Samuel Eliot Morison chronicles the postwar operations of the U.S. Navy in the Pacific: the surrender of outlying Japanese garrisons, the occupation of Japan, minesweeping approaches to Japanese ports, and Operation Magic Carpet for the return of armed forces to the United States. This volume features a descriptive list of all named ships of the U.S. Navy during World War II, all types of landing, beaching, and other "lettered" craft, and types of aircraft used by the navy during the war. It also includes a list of errata and a general index to volumes 1-14.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, January 21, 2008

This review is from: History of United States Naval Operations in World War II, Vol. 15: SUPPLEMENT AND GENERAL INDEX (Paperback)
This is part of a seminal history of the Navy in World War II. Anyone who is a historian should take some time and read this series. Sometimes dry, sometimes very well written, it gives the grand panorama to a naval war that rewrote the book on how the Navy would operate. A book that has been rewritten since.

4.0 out of 5 stars Navy World War II, February 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When Morison's History was first published I purchased all volumes except the supplement. Purchasing the supplement now filled out the full set.
I have used Morison's history to jog my memory of certain events that I experienced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Most recently what is now called Halsey's Typhoon in 1944. 790 men drowned and hardly anyone knows about their sacrifice. No medals, No battle stars, no monuments, no body seems to give a damn. 790 sailors. Close your eyes Navy Department. Maybe they will go away.
