5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!
I am big fan of guns namely the winchester. This is a great book. It explains how specific models and series of guns work, as well as the history behind the company and the manufacturing of the weapons. Mainly the book focuses on the specs of each arm. The type of gun, magazine, chamber, stock, sights, receiver, barrel, weight etc. Includes great pictures, and extra...

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Little For Too Many
While an interesting beginning for a novice collector the author spans too great a time period to adequately cover any series of Winchester firearms. Winchester collectors are quite attracted to styles or types of firearms. This book barely answers even the most rudimentary of questions and as such is an overall disappointment. Secondly, the book would be greatly...

The type of gun, magazine, chamber, stock, sights, receiver, barrel, weight etc. Includes great pictures, and extra historical data on comemorative models. A great book to have to teach yourself and your children about history's guns, as well as have a record of the many great guns our contry was founded and build on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Little For Too Many, June 15, 2000
This review is from: The History of Winchester Firearms 1866-1992 (Hardcover)
While an interesting beginning for a novice collector the author spans too great a time period to adequately cover any series of Winchester firearms. Winchester collectors are quite attracted to styles or types of firearms. This book barely answers even the most rudimentary of questions and as such is an overall disappointment. Secondly, the book would be greatly enhanced by more detailed and clear photography. This would assist the new collector in appreciating the marvel of these firearms - while providing a much better overview for future study.

5.0 out of 5 stars DATED BUT STILL USEFUL, December 19, 2010
This review is from: The History of Winchester Firearms 1866-1992 (Hardcover)
This is a review of THE HISTORY OF WINCHESTER FIREARMS 1966-1992 published in 1993 by the Winchester Press in Clinton, New Jersey. Mine is the hard cover sixth edition revised by Thomas Henshaw. Before becoming a consultant on firearms and ammunition the author was associated with Winchester for 36 years in sales, marketing and planning. Henshaw comes from a gun oriented family. His father was a well-known gunsmith in Pittsburgh who developed the "Henshaw Trigger Shoe" among other innovations.

Earlier editions of THE HISTORY OF WINCHESTER FIREARMS were edited by such legendary authors as Duncan Barnes, George Watrous, James Rikhoff, Thomas Hall and Pete Kuhlhoff. This is the latest edition of the classic reference book on Winchester firearms and it's worth having if your interested in this iconic line. Although it lacks the lavish, color illustrations of the more recent STANDARD CATALOG OF WINCHESTER FIREARMS by Joseph M. Cornell which came out in 2007, it's coverage of some models of Winchesters is actually a bit more comphrehensive. I found black and white photographs of Winchester's Model 88 lever-action rifle, for example. The STANDARD CATALOG described the Model 88 but included no photographs of it. The STANDARD CATALOG is also better of establishing the value of different Winchester models.

I believe Henshaw's book is better for history, but it doesn't really address gun values and its black and white illustrations aren't as nice as the STANDARD CATALOG's beautiful color photographs are. If you really like Winchesters and have relatively deep pockets, it would be best to have both books in my opinion. I was impressed by Henshaw's 6th edition of THE HISTORY OF WINCHESTER FIREARMS 1866-1992 and gave it five stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment, June 20, 2008
This review is from: The History of Winchester Firearms 1866-1992 (Hardcover)
Rarely have I been this disappointed in a book. It claims to be the history of Winchester which is certainly is not. What it is is page after page of very low quality black and white photos of Winchester firearms accompanied by a simplistic, broad brush description of each. Most of the text seems to have been lifted directly from one or more similar books which do a much better job than this piece of junk.
