4.0 out of 5 stars Good Viewing For Any Badger Football Fan, August 28, 2009

This review is from: The History of Wisconsin Football (DVD)
Having grown up in Madison, Wisconsin I was very exposed to UW sports teams. I have been a Badger football fan since 1967.

This DVD does a decent job chronicling the history of UW football from the late 1800's until just after the 2006 season.

Of course, about half the disc is dedicated to the Barry Alvarez years (1990-2005). Anyone who has followed UW football before then knows Wisconsin was mostly bad, and rarely rising above mediocre. The only high points before 1993, were the "Hard Rock" defenses of the 1950's, Allen Ameche's Heisman Trophy, and the late rally (that fell short)against USC in the 1963 Rose Bowl. Which are well covered here.

The bad, as well as the good is mentioned, John Coatta's disasterous three seasons ('67-'69)and Don Morton's inept tenure (1987-1989)are briefly gone over.

There are a lot of interviews with former Badger players, Billy Marek, Al Toon, Joe Panos, Pat Richter, etc., etc. There is a lot of good game footage, old and recent.

Tom Wopat does a good job narrating, but I noticed some errors on facts. John Coatta's first 23 games as head coach were winless, there was a tie with Iowa early in the '67 season. It was not technically a 23 game losing streak as stated on the DVD. John Coatta did not win his last three games as head coach. He won three games in 1969, not consecutively, I did attend those games.

It was stated that Billy Marek's 304 yard rushing performance against Minnesota in the final game of the 1974 season was his last game as a Badger. It was not, he was a junior in 1974, and came back in 1975 to have a good season (over 1,000 yards) with a very disappointing team (very bad QB's, no passing attack). There was no leaving early for the NFL back then. Those facts could have been easily checked at the UW's official athletic web site.

Overall, a very good DVD for any Badger football fan, young or old. They will see that the UW didn't have much to brag about until after Barry arrived in 1990.
