Book Description

The Nipmuc Indians destroyed the first settlement at Worcester in 1675. A second attempt was made in the 1680s, but a permanent settlement did not take root until 1713. Worcester's first citizens battled French and Indian enemies and endured a succession of political, ethnic and religious rivalries. How did the Nipmuc deal with the English threat? How did settlers cope with changes in economic and political life after the Revolution? For the first time in 170 years, a historian takes a fresh look at the history of early Worcester.

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad, but poorly printed March 2, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The illustrations and maps were dark, blurry, and undiscernable. However, there was good recognition showed to the veterans of worcester, although I wish there was better biographical descriptions concerning the specifics of military service rendered by those men.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worcester, Massachusetts -- and Shays Rebellion October 29, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Worcester, Massachusetts was the home of a number of my ancestors in the early 1700s to early 1800s, and I wanted to read this book. Kenneth J. Moynihan, the author, has done a wonderful job. I was especially pleased to read over several pages about one of my grandfathers, Daniel Baird, who was arrested and charged with treason during the Shays Rebellion. He was a tavern keeper, a committeeman, and served in the Revolutionary War. From this remove in time, I see him as a man who had passionate beliefs. Fortunately for me, he was pardoned by the government.
