Book Description

A HISTORY OF THE WORK OF REDEMPTION

CONTAINING THE OUTLINES OF A BODY OF DIVINITY,
INCLUDING A VIEW OF CHURCH HISTORY,
IN A METHOD ENTIRELY NEW

They who have a relish for the study of the scriptures, and have access to peruse the following sheets, will, I am persuaded, deem themselves indebted to the Rev. Mr. Edwards of Newhaven, for consenting to publish them. Though the acute philosopher and deep divine appears in them, yet they are in the general better calculated for the instruction and improvement of ordinary Christians, than those of President Edward's writings, where the abstruse nature of the subject, or the subtle objections of opposers of the truth, led him to more abstract and metaphysical reasonings. The manuscript being intrusted to my care, I have not presumed to make any change in the sentiments or composition. I have, however, taken the liberty to reduce it from the form of sermons, which it originally bore, to that of a continued treatise; and I have so altered and diversified the marks of the several divisions and subdivisions, that each class of heads might be easily distinguished.

5.0 out of 5 stars A History of the Work of Redemption April 17, 2014

Jonathan Edwards is widely regarded as one of the greatest minds in the history of American theology. This book shows his erudition, along with his pastoral heart and love of Scripture. This is a great Biblical survey. It could be used for Bible studies or for personal devotions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking February 19, 2014

Jonathan Edwards may have been the first theologian to attempt what we now call "Biblical Theology" as compared with "Systematic." He intended to write, "a body of divinity in an entire new method, being thrown into the form of a history; considering the affair of Christian Theology, as the whole of it, in each part, stands in reference to the great work of redemption by Jesus Christ... particularly considering all parts of the grand scheme, in their historical order." Alas, he died before he was able to complete this "body of divinity," and what we have is the sermons he preached from which he intended to develop a more thorough theology.

What we do have is breathtaking. It is the biblical counterpart to his philosophical The End for Which God Created the World. Where the latter is a tightly woven argument showing that God's own glory is the ultimate end in the creation of the world, this work shows how that purpose has been worked out throughout all of history. Where the former shows Edwards's unparalleled analytic and theological abilities, this work puts on display how thoroughly biblical his mind was. He was much more than America's greatest philosopher; his mind was saturated with scripture to a degree that most will never experience.

The book is split into 3 sections: "From the Fall of Man to the Incarnation of Christ," "From the Incarnation to His Resurrection," and "From the Resurrection to the End of the World." I found all three parts to be enlightening, but particularly the first two which deal specifically with Biblical history.

The book reads much more easily than his philosophical works.

History of Christianity - No Saving Grace, No Social Grace (Dr. Ram Munjal, Georgia, USA)

I first came across a series of sermons given by Jonathan Edwards of New England on the "History of the Work of Redemption" when I had purchased in 1990 his two volume work published by Banner of Truth. Since that time I have read this sermon several times. Jonathan Edwards was indeed filled with the Holy Spirit of Messiah and obviously had tremendous grasp of the Holy Scriptures and was soaked in Scriptures. He divided the work of Redemption that God carried on from the fall of Adam and Eve to the end of the world into three periods.

Period I - from the fall of man to the incarnation of the Messiah,

Period II - from Messiah's incarnation to His resurrection, and

Period III - from Messiah's resurrection to the end of the world.

His knowledge of the Holy Scriptures shines forth in his covering of the first two periods. Indeed it is Masterly, Magisterial and Superb. Period III beginning with Messiah's resurrection to the end of the word he works out in ten parts.

Part I.

Title: A History of the Work of Redemption

First Banner of Truth Trust Copyright: 2003

Type of Book: Hardback

General Subject Matter: Redemptive work of God in history

Price: $29.00

ISBN: 0-85151-844-3

The purpose of this book comes from rational deduction. Although the body of work is attributed to Jonathan Edwards, and the chapters are actually sermons preached by Jonathan Edwards, he did not write this "book." This "book" is a composition of thirty (30) sermons preached by Edwards to his Northampton congregation in 1739. Edwards desired to write a book on the redemptive work of God in history from the fall of man to the consummation of all things by God. Unfortunately Edwards died before he could achieve his goal. Jonathan Edwards, Jr. in 1773 helped see these sermons brought together in a single publication.

Edward's original purpose, deduced from the sermons which serve as an outline for the book he did not write was to give a clear and concise working of God through this atoning work. Edwards purposed to give a clear rendition of God's work from the fall of man until the beginning of eternity and beyond.

It was Edward's contention that everything that every transpired in human history was totally subservient to God's work of redemption. He also contended that nothing could ever thwart that work of God and regardless of any instance referenced actually furthered the work of God.

The theme of this book is the redemptive work of God in this world throughout history.
