From the Studio

Witness live action from the first global conflict - World War I and the unflagging commitment of American troops as they march across Europe in their endeavor to make the world safe for democracy!

Never had so many nations taken up arms in a single war as they did during World war I or the Great War as it was called by contemporaries. Never had so many bloody battles been fought in such gruesome manner.

The war, which lasted four years between 1914 and 1918, was the first man-made catastrophe of the 20th century. The reasons for the war though, continue to baffle scholars. Some vouch that it was desire for territorial conquest, while others argue that it the massive arms race triggered by Germany that was responsible for the war. It is safe to conclude that it was a combination of these and other reasons that precipitated war.

Never before had tanks, planes and chemical weapons been used to destroy human life and property as was witnessed during the Great War. Predictably, Europe’s powers soon took sides and faced each other- Russia, France and Britain on one side and the triad of Germany, Turkey and France on the other. Eventually, the War spread beyond Europe as the warring continent turned to its colonies and friends for help. This included the United States, which joined the War in 1917 when President Woodrow Wilson called on Americans to "make the world safe for democracy."

This DVD captures the American war effort from the historic declaration of war by president Wilson to battlefields of Europe in a simple yet comprehensive manner.

1.0 out of 5 stars Judge by its cover?, October 2, 2011

I cannot help but think, if the producers were so careless as to use an image of WWII german tanks on the cover of this WWI DVD, how careless were they with the rest of the product?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Vintage Footage, April 26, 2006
This review is from: History Of World War I America Goes Over (DVD)
This is some of the oldest film footage I've ever ordered on DVD. You can see the age in the grain of the film, but it's not really that distracting. If anything, it makes it seem more real, you know?

The clips try to make light of the boys going off to war - and I'm sure their original intent was to make Americans less freaked out about their soldiers heading across the ocean.

It makes this part of history seem real to me in a way that history class didn't.

In a day and age when we are debating the role of America as "The World's Policeman" it's interesting to see documentary footage from an era when the country was mostly isolationist and only went off to war in Europe as a last resort - after all, didn't our ocean's protect us? The footage here is very good, particularly considering how old it is (1914 to 1917) and how hard it must have been to preserve. There is footage from both before the war with the president motivivating people to fight and during the battles t hemselves, which is the original trench warfare in the War To End All Wars. I liked the fact that there is little to no narration, so the films have to stand up on their own - and they do so very well.
