Editorial Reviews

Highly Informative 4 Part Video Program tracing the history of railroading in America. History buffs, students and rail fans alike will enjoy this educational and entertaining video! 80 minutes in length. 1. A Wild & Impracticle Scheme (1800-1845) In 1845 John Stevens obtained a charter to build the first steam railroad in America... 2. One Nation... Indivisible (1845-1865) By the 1850's railroads were not only capturing the eyes of businessmen, they were capturing the hearts of people as well... 3. Transcontinental (1865-1880) For thirty years people dreamed of the time when a train would reach the Pacific Ocean... 4. The Golden Age (1880-1916) By 1900 five different railroads had reached the Pacific Ocean, and between the Atlantic and Pacific the land was being invaded by a spider web of rails... For railroads it was a time of major improvements...the telegraph, air brakes, automatic couplers, standardized time and track gauge, and bigger and more powerful locomotives. Hear the story of George Pullman and his famous passenger cars and Fred Harvey and his transformation of railroad restaurants. If you love trains we guarantee you'll love this video! 5.0 out of 5 stars Train lover, June 2, 2000

This review is from: History of America's Railroads [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is an excellent production and in addition to all the historical content, which I would assume teachers of American history would love, the video is entertaining to watch. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves trains.
