5.0 out of 5 stars This book has stuck with me!, March 18, 2008
This review is from: He Hit Me Back First!: Development of the Will in Children for Making Choices : Activities for Teaching and Parenting (Paperback)
This book can often be found used for pennies - for some reason book-sellers don't want it anymore. I assume this is because the book was used by the state of New York and then replaced with a different curriculum, leaving many copies sitting on shelves or in storage facilities.
This is an excellent book - I am happy to give it 5 stars. I must say that I am glad I found this book in my first year of teaching. Now that I am back in grad school reflecting on the teaching process for an advanced degree, I can say that this book has influenced my teaching style a LOT. I hope it continues to be so helpful! I recently ordered a fresh copy (for pennies, really!) and I can't wait for it to arrive so I can share it with my fellow students.
The book's curricula is excellent for teaching (and learning) about violence and anger, and as a model of everyday discipline the book taught me how to ask piercing questions that focuses children's self-reflective abilities. I hate having to overcome the wills of students, and this book gives specific tool to instead develop the will-power of the children in a positive way. Even if a teacher does not plan on teaching a unit on violence, this book is worth having just for the easy to use teaching techniques. Just what the doctor ordered!
