Editorial Reviews

A federal agent, Nick Allen (Billy Dee Williams) whose daughter dies of a heroin overdose is determined to destroy the drug ring that supplied her. He organizes a small independent task force of mercenaries to travel to France in order to kill the nine leaders of a Marseilles drug syndicate. The motley crew of angry American citizens includes construction worker, Mike Willmer (Richard Pryor); call-girl Sherry Nielson (Gwen Welles); rogue cop, Dutch Schiller (Warren J. Kemmerling); college professor Barry Strong (Paul Hampton) and the kindly old Jewish couple, Ida (Janet Brandt) and Herman (Sid Melton), who want to inflict Old Testament revenge upon the syndicate. Photographed by legendary cinematographer, John A. Alonzo (Chinatown) with a beautiful score by Lalo Schifrin (Dirty Harry). Directed by Sidney J. Furie (The Ipcress File).

I saw this film for the first time a few years ago after seeing that a friend of mine on IMDB rated it a perfect 10/10, and I have to say, it completely blew me away. The box art and poster are misleading because this isn't a slam-bang action movie. It's first and foremost a slow-building character study, as well as a nuanced revenge drama, and all of the characters are interesting. I won't give away much of the plot, because that would spoil the fun, but I'll just say that things do pick up at the end and get chaotic. The finale is simply one of the best sequences I've seen executed in any film, not just in the action genre. The performances are all terrific. Billy Dee Williams does some of his absolute best acting work here, and Richard Pryor gave what I consider to be an award-worthy performance. If you loved his work in "Blue Collar" and "Some Kind of Hero", you'll certainly love him here. The rest of the cast is filled with mostly unknowns, yet they do top-notch work. The film takes a very subtle approach in developing its characters as well, keeping most of their backstory in the shadows for the most part, which is more than satisfying. To sum it all up, I'll just say that in order to truly be impressed by this film as much as I was, it's probably a good idea to set your expectations low so you don't come away with an underwhelming feeling. I knew very little about this film before watching it and was simply knocked out by the end. It's quite an experience and I'm surprised it's as obscure as it is, but thanks to this wonderful Blu-ray release, I can relive the film in all its glory, and in HD to boot. Highly recommended.

A very solid revenge movie with good acting by Billy Dee Williams, and scene stealer Richard Pryor, it moves slow in the first half of the film, the second half is hard and unrelenting, the box art is deceptive and inaccurate, this movie is like an extended version of the series Mission Impossible with unedited violence. The direction of the film was great, it is a classy movie with hard edges. don't sleep on this one.

This is a top-notch thriller, very reminiscent of The French Connection. Everything about this film screams 'perfection' - the plot, acting, dialog, scenery - even the score fits perfectly. Various subplots are brilliantly interwoven, culminating in one of the most satisfactory endings in cinematic history. Watch closely - I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed!!!

Nice little flick that is long in run time and continues to interest you well into the ending. Using "The French Connection" (1971) as its role model, it's about a federal agent (played by wonderful actor Billy Dee Williams) who assembles a team of regulars to knock off some French heroin dealers. Yeah, it's absurd, but actually it is a slick little film that keep me interested all the way through.

Billy Dee Williams does a fine job, as he did in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Keep on trucking brother.

I have enjoyed "Hit" since I first saw it. It is somewhat "tongue in cheek" but on a level with a lot of the "Bond" movies. I waited a long time to get a WS copy. It is uncut and can be a good evening's replacement for some of the "Dead Time" offered by the television industry. If nothing else, it beats the hell out of having to watch 25-30 minutes of commercials for every hour of programming.

Billy Dee Williams is viewed by many as the Hot Black Sexy Symbol of his era. This is true, but this brotha was a very good actor, Brian's Song, etc. He does some mighty fine acting in HIt, which is very similar to the French Connection. Wow, 1973 was a hot year for good movies and this was one of them. It was slow but had great character developement, humor, sex, and violence. Everyone should be able to
enjoy this movie. The ending was a little weak but it works for Billy Dee.

The movie cover is misleading. The movie is a sort of French Connection with the multible assassinations reminiscent of The Godfather part 1.Decent acting by Billy Dee Williams.Using a junkie who is going "cold turkey" to assist in a revenge plot against drug traffickers is somewhat unbelievable.Worth watching if you are a Billy Dee Williams or Richard Pryor fan.
