Biography

The history of the jazz/R&B combo founded by South African Jewish emigré Manfred Sepse Lubowitz in London in 1962 can be divided into three parts, not counting the prog-rock group that rose to fame in 1977 with a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light," Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The first incarnation began life as the Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers, formed by Mike Hugg and Lubowitz, who had… Read more in Amazon's Manfred Mann Store

Editorial Reviews

Manfred Mann was a British Beat, R&B and Pop band of the 1960s, named after its South African keyboard player and founder, who later led the successful 1970s follow-on group Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Frustrated with the limitations and image of being seen purely as a hit singles band (their last two albums failed to chart), the group split in 1969, while their final hit, "Ragamuffin Man", was in the Top 10.

This review is from: Hit Man: Essential Singles 1963-1969 (Audio CD)
I only really knew of "Mighty Quinn" and "Do Wah Diddy", so was shocked to find some really rocking stuff on here. I'd seen a video of "Hubble Bubble" somewhere, so wanted to find out what else I was missing. Granted, there is a lot of fluffy pop, but there are a lot of really rocking garage and blues tunes as well. Also, the very last song "Up the Junction" is absolutely top notch 60's Psychedelia. If you're really into 60's stuff, you owe it to yourself to give this CD a listen.
