Book Description

October 1, 1995
A professional bass player instructs future musicians about the basics of starting a music career, including finding other players, choosing a band name, writing music, and booking gigs.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up?A sound, sensible guide to forming a rock band. Powell covers everything from finding players; buying equipment; and writing songs to booking gigs; making recordings; and dealing with drugs, alcohol, and sex. She includes helpful (but incomplete) addresses and references to other titles. Detailed diagrams show the set up of a PA system, the arrangement of the stage, and the workings of a sound studio. Written in a straightforward, chatty, although at times condescending style, this is an effective how-to manual. However, most YAs won't pick it up on their own; it will need a guiding hand to be truly useful. A supplemental purchase.?Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 8^-12. Finally, a really good source for young rock musicians. Powell combines hard facts, practical tips, realistic advice, and encouragement in a readable, well-organized guide. Some of her attempts at humor may elicit groans, but the relaxed yet serious approach to a subject fascinating to many teens will impress young readers. Powell's own experience in bands shows as she guides the reader through the intricacies of a public address system and the nitty-gritty of producing a demo. Quotes from well-known rockers, past and present, support her points, and there's a brief but important chapter about some of the more dangerous aspects of the rock world--substance abuse, irresponsible sexual activity, hearing loss, and back trouble. A bibliography of the excellent resources mentioned in the text and suggestions of other recommended readings would have been a good addition. The dust jacket was not previewed. It is hoped that it will be as strong, appealing, and relatively timeless as the text. Debbie Carton

Lousy book, containing no information. If the author had actually discussed every item she lists in the table of contents and captions, it would be helpful, but she did not. This book is empty and useless. A better choice is "Start Your Own Band" by Marty Jourard. It is aimed at a slightly older age group, but it at least has some information in it (though it is a tad fluffy too). But it is miles above this one.
