4.0 out of 5 stars Cool oddball hitman story, but I wanted more! April 26, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Ex-hitman Jerome Archer (Browning) is forced out of retirement when a pair of Census Bureau agents recruit his help to track down a dangerous contract killer. I will ignore the fact that I have no idea why they chose the Bureau of the Census as their heroic force in this movie, but then again it just adds to the uniqueness of this movie.

Speed Razor (Lanier) is the young, flamboyant, and dangerous hitman making a load of noise on the streets. The overachieving "agents," Frank Donnolly and Alice Fresno (Brick and Robinson), are on his tail and enlist the help of Archer, a now bookstore manager happy with his crime-free life. Archer's dive back into the crime world makes him reflect upon his own life and forces him to make a series of decisions that will alter his future.

What I like about Browning is that he's a normal looking guy. While we're typically used to the stereotypical action hero, like the Bruce Willis type, Browning seems like a genuine nice guy who you'd never suspect as a killer. To me this was a breath of fresh air, it rids the pretentiousness of Hollywood actioners and brings some unseen realism into the picture. Lanier on the other hand is a quirky individual who's as equally unsuspecting as a killer. Together the two are a strange duo that, while take some getting used to, make this movie something original.

The story itself is nothing we haven't seen before. A veteran is called out of retirement to settle some score or solve some conflict with his own life. Even so, it is still enjoyable with this film. The movie also brings much comedic elements as well. The two agents provide some wacky dialog and there are some fairly humorous villains.

My main problem with the film is that there simply was not enough action.

Don't waste your time trying to get into this movie. Bad acting and bad everything else that matters in a movie.

The good, the bad, and the bizarre:

The bad: It's rough in parts. It does not start out well, and at times is uneven, and perhaps even awkward. I would frankly be stunned if the budget was over $50,000. One is often very aware that one is watching a movie. The dialogue seems a little forced, and might have been better off done as improv for some scenes. This is the writer/director's first movie (he mainly works in animation), and it shows. There are parts that are *very* stylistically anime/cartoon, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Not that they are unrealistic, just with a certain artistic flair. Stylistic, not silly.

The good points: The acting is often very, very good. The plot is effing awesome, and does not go where one thinks it is going to go. It's frighteningly realistic in terms of many actions people take, who are not superheroes, omniscient, or brilliant. They're just people, moving forward with their own desires and actions. It's nice to see a movie that has actual people in it. The people in the movie do not look like movie stars - thank goddess - which makes it that much more believable. The sets <er, locations> are well chosen, decently lit for what I assume is very little money, and the limitations of budget have largely been dealt with. The music - much of which was also done by the writer/director, holy kemeza! - is better, period, and also better used than in most high budget action movies.

The bizarre, at least for a review: Dear Mariah Robinson, who is awesome and not at all bizarre, if you're straight in real life <and if not, what a loss for our team :( >, I'd love to take you to dinner. Text me, please? ;)

*****

Summary: For a low budget, indie movie, it's creative and awesome. Four stars just because of the limitations that entails, and a lot of "first movie" stuff. If you only like mega budget stuff, you won't like it, and will probably hate it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hit Parade Rocks!!! May 4, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Hit Parade is from the twisted mind of Joe Casey - comic book writer and Ben 10 co-creator. I was lucky enough to catch a screening. Loved it! A former hit man (Jonathan Browning) turned bookstore manager has a decision to make when his old profession comes calling for him. Browning is excellent. Another stand out is Nicholas Lanier as Speed Razor (a comic book geek/hit man/clown). What makes this movie rise above the indie pack is its fast-paced, funny-as-hell dialog. If you're a pop culture junkie, or if you love smart/funny dark comedies, then check out Hit Parade. Oh, it's super violent and I totally watched it from underneath my blanket!
